Set Up Guides - SmartFTP

The following is a rough guide to uploading files to our server using SmartFTP.

Please not that we do not directly support this program, the guide is here to assist you in uploading to our servers. If you encounter any problems with the SmartFTP software you should contact its publishers directly.

Step 1.

Before we can setup the connection, we must set Smart FTP to not use Passive FTP mode. To do this you need to open the Settings menu, which can be accessed by clicking Tools > Settings.

This will bring open a window, click the Connection option in the list on the left hand side. This will show you options as shown in diagram below.

The area circle below is the setting you need to change, please ensure it is on Active Mode (PORT) and not Passive Mode (PASV). Once you have changed this click the OK button at the bottom of the window.

Step 2.

Now you are ready to connect to our server and start an FTP transfer. At the top of the window you will see some blank fields (circled below), this is where you input your connection information.

The following points relate to the circles A, B & C in the picture below.

Circle A) You will then need to setup your connection to our server. In the address field, type your domain followed by a slash and your domain again (eg. www.letmein.com/www.letmein.com). The reason we type it twice is the first time is to locate which computer on the net you need to upload to, and the second time is to locate where abouts on that machine you wish to upload to.

ADVANCED NOTE: You can also put in the IP address of your site, followed by your domain name. eg. 192.168.0.124/www.letmein.com

Circle B) In the Login field, type your designated username for our machines.

Circle C) In the password field, type your password. You will notice you cannot read your password when you type it in (each character will be replaced by a *), this is for security purposes to stop people getting your password by merely looking over your shoulder.

Step 3.

Now that you have done this, double check the Port field has 21 in it, and Anonymous is unchecked. Having different settings in these fields will hinder your connection.

Hit the return key on your keyboard and your machine will start connecting to your FTP area. Whilst this is happening, check the log window for progress on your connection (ensuring before you do this that you are connected to the net).

Step 4.

The next stage is now to upload your documents. To do this you need to browse to your website folder on your local machine. To do this, go to the view menu and then the Toolbars option. This will open up a smaller submenu, and within that there will be a Local Folder Bar option, click it. a new window will appear on the left of your connection, use this to browse to your website folder on your machine.

Step 5.

To upload files, simply Drag & Drop files from your local machine to your internet site, you can monitor its process by using the log window. To download files, Drag & Drop files from the Connection window to your local machine.

Thats it!

Additional
