Once connected, you'll notice
that folders on your hard drive are displayed on the left part of
the screen. You can navigate through these folders/files the
same way as when you use your Windows Explorer.
NOTE:
There is a drop-down box on the left half of the screen which
by default says "Web Files". That means that these are
the ONLY files that will be displayed!! If you click this
box, you can see there are several different options to choose from.
If you can't find a file you want to transfer, check the drop-down
box first.
First, navigate to the folder
where you are storing your Web site files on the top half of the
screen. (NOTE: if you want this folder to open automatically when
you sign on to your domain, enter this folder information in the
"Local File Folder" box on the FTP Connection Information
screen.) On the bottom
left part of the screen are the files contained within that folder.
On the right half of the
screen the files and folders on your home folder
are displayed. Depending on the type of account you have,
you should see several names of files and folders (on the right
half of the screen).
www (this is where you upload your Web site files.
See below for more information)
You should also see some
or all of the following files and folders.
These are for internal use ONLY. The server
uses these files for various functions -- DO NOT TOUCH THESE
FILES! YOU COULD WIPE OUT YOUR DOMAIN ACCOUNT!
.bashrc
.bash_history
.bash_logout
.bash_profile
.htpasswd
mail
pass
.screenrc
NOTE: If you DO NOT see
all of these files and folders in your FTP program, don't worry.
They're there, but your "view" settings in your FTP program
are probably set to "simple" (or it's equivalent).
This will not allow you to view files that begin with a period (.).
THE WWW DIRECTORY
All of your Web
site files should be uploaded into the "www" folder.
Double-click on this folder and its contents will be displayed in
the lower half of the window. Depending
on the type of account you have, you should see several names of
files and folders (on the right half of the screen).
cgi-bin/
default.htm
forms/
index.htm
links/
missing.html
order.htm
If you're using FrontPage,
you might also see the following files and folders. These
are for internal use by FrontPage ONLY. The server
uses these files for various functions -- DO NOT TOUCH THESE
FILES! YOU COULD WIPE OUT YOUR FRONTPAGE EXTENSIONS!
_borders/
_fpclass/
_overlay/
_private/
_themes/
_vti_bin/
_vti_cnf/
_vti_inf.html
_vti_log/
_vti_pvt/
_vti_txt/
postinfo.html
Because
this is primarily a tutorial for those of you who are going to upload
your Web pages, we'll only be dealing with the www directory from
now on.
UPLOADING
YOUR WEB PAGES
You should
still be looking at the contents of your www folder. The next step
is to navigate the left part of the Free FTP screen to show the
Web site files you want to transfer to the server. This part works
exactly like your Windows Explorer. You see the list of folders,
or directories, on your hard drive (usually drive c:\) on the upper
portion of the left half of the screen. Scroll down to find the
folder your Web page files are in and double-click it. Notice
that the contents of this folder are now displayed on the lower
portion of the left half of the screen. (If you can't see any files,
read NOTE: above!)
Now you
must select the files you wish to transfer to the Web site.
Using CNTL + Click, or SHIFT + Click, select each file you wish
to transfer. When the desired files are highlighted, just
"click-and-drag" them from the left part of the screen
(your computer) to the right part of the screen (our server). Make
sure you're not dropping them in the wrong folder.
You should
now be able to see all of the files you've transferred in your www
directory on the server. You should now open your Web browser
to make sure everything transferred correctly. All files transferred
should be available IMMEDIATELY in your Web browser. If they
don't appear, there's something wrong. Go over the steps
above and make sure you did everything correctly.
